At Offbeat we genuinely enjoy traveling in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico. We do it on our free time with our families, we offer to host our friends during down time and we take pride when others enjoy the places we take them. It is our passion.

We need to feel the travel programs once in a while. It is one thing to talk about travel, service learning, and adventure, and another thing completely to immerse ourselves in it. The energy and passion we get from this are invaluable.

In 2012 he began collaborating with service-based learning organizations who he reports have had an immensely lasting impact in his communities. What once began with a group of local volunteers showing students how to create structures like cement floors and latrine bathrooms has developed into a lasting partnership over the past decade.

When I think about my time leading travel programs in the Dominican Republic, I’m always hit with feelings of warmth and joy, closely followed by sadness and loss – the one-two punch of nostalgia. It’s hard to sum up what that experience was like, and how it changed me. Have you ever felt like you were completely out of your element but also overjoyed to be there at the same time? That was me, for 10 straight weeks.
